Media Vocabulary 


Genre: a style or category of art, music, or literature

Hybrid Genre : mixture of genre 

Semiotics: the study of signs/anything which stands for 'something else/how we read images and pictures in an attempt to decode them and make sense of what they mean to us

Denotations: what we see when we look at an image (what it is)

Connotations: what we understand from this image

Audience: the assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert, or meeting.

Demographic: way of categorizing the population by age/money/occupation

Psychographic: way of categorizing the population by personality

Target: set of customers whom it directs it marketing efforts

Gatekeeping: a term which is applied to the editing and filtered process were decisions are made to let some information 'pass through' to the receiver (audience) and other information remains barred
